Shifting Tides: Rise, Resurgence, and Deep Histories from the Atlantic to the Pacific

This lecture is the opening event to the symposium, “Entangling the Pacific and Atlantic Worlds. Past and Present.” Matt Matsuda (Rutgers University) will look at the presumed shift of power from Europe and the Atlantic to Asia and the Pacific in the context of centuries-long histories of these regions: from ancient voyaging and archipelagic cultures, to imperial and military struggles, to economic and environmental challenges.
